This summer my youngest daughter will be working her very first job through a summer program. One of the wonderful things that I like about the organization she is working for is that they do a financial workshop. The more information you can learn about how to make your money work for you as you develop the better.
As a family earlier this year we developed a system to teach the kids in our family how to take care of the money they earn. A couple of lessons that were implemented in the system are:
*paying yourself first
*spending money within your means
*setting goals to purchase large ticket items
*balancing your accounts
*revising how you distribute your money when you get an increase
When the kids receive their allowance weekly, the first thing they do is fill out a deposit slip for their savings.
Doing this has help them understand the value of money more and they have been better about asking their parents or other family members to by things for them. One of them started saving more than what was suggested weekly from his allowance. We will tweek the system as we go along but for now these little lessons are giving them tools to build upon for their financial future.
Because of this system my daughter has done an estimated calculation of what her pay will be, how much she should save and how she will spend the balance. I'm proud of her because she did this on her own and then ask me what I thought about her plan.
Had a busy but wonderful weekend filled with family and friends.
Friday...preview of an audition video for a Health & Wellness Segment that has been submitted to Oprah by Dr. Renee Parks of the Lakeview Mansion in Baltimore
Saturday...Birthday Party for the latest addition to our family, my cousin, Malaya. She's pictured below with my youngest daughter, tired out and hungry from all the festivities of the day.
Sunday...my daughter and her friend Ashley spent the morning volunteering for the Baltimore Womens Classic 5k , America's second oldest women's race. Staying involved in the community is very important.
I spent the afternoon with the ladies of the Sisters4Sisters Network Inc., enjoying our monthly networking, motivation and celebration of women in business meeting.
Ended the day with the family eating dinner, watching the BET Awards. Simply enjoying some down time.
A few weeks ago, we surprised our little Lexi with a new little treat. We began to introduce her to the world of Chef Michael's Canine Creations. And let me tell you, she loved them. Chef Michael creations are now one of Lexi's favorites. If you've never seen the commmercial for these wonderful dog meals check it out below.
Paying attention to the needs of our children is our job as a parent. Deciding how to adhere to that need sometimes is a challenge that we have to overcome to ensure that we produce well rounded individuals in society who are equipped with all the appropriate skills. Over time I have often observed my youngest daughter and how she doesn’t always pay as much attention to her surroundings as I think she needs to. So as her mother I have been thinking of various things that I think could help her become more aware of her surroundings as well as responding in the most appropriate way.
After some careful consideration, I have decided to research martial arts programs in my area. I have always believe that the things we participate in teach us something whether it’s negative or positive and I think the lessons taught in martial arts teach discipline, the understanding of your body and space as well as what is going on around you.
